Mixing Masterclass with Jacquire King [MixCon 2020]
My Takeaways
- recorded everything in Pro Tools, but exported everything (printing some stems with things that were only available in PT, such as a Sansamp plugin), then did all the mixing in Luna
- record as close to the finished sound as possible, this means committing to some compression, EQ, distortion
- important to establish the sonic context and landscape that you’re building that informs the journey and the next steps
- took a mono source (space echo), added Valhalla shimmer plugin to seteroize it
- printing these FX from the beginning make it more fun to listen to on repeat when mixing, and also makes it sound more like a record right from the start
- if you’re producing a project, make rough mixes as you go
when mixing, building a mix bus is always the best place to start
- EQ (Pro-Q 3)
- SSL Bus Compressor
- Infected Mushroom Pusher
- Studer Tape Emulation on all channels (built into Luna)
- pictured the 3 singers on stage when panning and balancing
- uses Studer tape emulation as a tone box and compressor on background vocals, before going to the mix bus
- bump in EQ at 2.3K in the bass to give the notes more definition, but that freq chosen while playing the whole mix, not in solo
- fader volume is logarithmic, so likes to keep things as close to 0 as possible to preserve the ability to be as subtle as possible
- on the drum bus, starts with an EQ there first, before trying to target any of the individual kits pieces
- on acoustic guitar, slight wide EQ low-mid boost, followed by a compressor with slow attack and long release so the compressor sits on that sound for a while, and the result of this compressed low end makes the top feel brighter
- overall, start mix at mix bus, then the groups, and the individual elements last, “start at the end and work your way back”
